Officials from Washburn Public School District, Consolidated Construction Company, Inc. and EngTech celebrated the official groundbreaking for upgrades and additions to current School campus.
The first piece of the Washburn school was originally built in 1928 and many additions have been added to the campus since then. The district identified that it was time to renovate the building to add space and modernize the facility. Washburn Public Schools hosted several public meetings and gathered input from the building committee and staff to determine support for the addition and renovation through a bond referendum, as well as determine areas of improvement for the school. In December 2022, a $7.9 million bond referendum passed with a 67% yes vote!
“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Washburn school and community,” said Cassidy Hartman, Director of Business Development for Consolidated Construction. “This project has been carefully thought out by the building committee, school board, administration, and staff, so breaking ground is a huge win for the district.”
The expanded and renovated Washburn School will include over 30,000 sq ft of renovation to the existing building and approximately 3,800 sq ft of new addition space. This project will include two new classrooms, relocating administrative offices to be more centralized and secure, a new cafeteria and commons space to serve more students at once, renovating the interior finishes of the Olde Gym and relocating the fitness center to the front of the building for better access. “Overall, these improvements will help the school have a better flow of operations for students and staff as well as provide more space for the future generations. We have designed an optimal learning environment that will meet our growing and varying need for strategies while meeting students where they are to get them to the ultimate finish line,” declared Washburn Public School Superintendent Dr. Penny Veit-Hetletved
“Consolidated Construction and project architect, EngTech, aided the school in hosting community and staff listening sessions to gauge the wants, needs, and budget expectations before developing the project. With the community’s input and support, we’re giving them the right school at the right time, with amenities and space that suit Washburn students now and in the foreseeable future,” Hartman said.
Construction completion is scheduled for August 2024.
