Consolidated Construction’s seven-year partnership with Enerbase Cooperative culminated the development of a 4,373-square-foot convenience store in Minot, North Dakota. This uncommon C-store integrates Amazon’s Just Walk Out artificial intelligence (AI) technology that blends computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning using 233 strategically placed cameras mounted on a custom overhead Unistrut grid and a controlled entry gate system. New construction replaced a demolished facility, and included restrooms, office space, climate-controlled storage, a 115-square-foot freezer, and a 297-square-foot cooler.
Extensive collaboration with Amazon, Enerbase, and engineering consultants ensured precise camera placement using 3D modeling for clash detection. The team balanced advanced technology with aesthetics, using natural light and camouflaging techniques to maintain a welcoming atmosphere. Exterior site development included a reconstructed 22-stall parking lot, stormwater management via a swale system, improved traffic flow and the existing car wash exterior was enhanced with new fascia, soffits, stone wainscotting, and a 10×20-foot kiosk for staff shelter.
Despite challenges such as municipal zoning, a condensed site footprint, and environmental concerns like petroleum-contaminated soil, Consolidated Construction delivered an innovative, customer-focused facility. The successful execution of this project highlights the team’s expertise in blending technology, functionality, and design for a modern retail environment.
This project was awarded Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin’s Project of Distinction Project of the Year.
